kuća / kući (working title)
Right now I am realizing a project focusing our migration to Austria in 1992. The first photograph (2019) shows the north-facade of our house in Bosnia which we left unfinished. Since 2011, every now and then some work is done to finalise it. The first image you see is the recently installed window which reflects the surrounding vis-à-vis. The bottom part of the reflection shows the dike, protecting the area from the river Sava. Above the dike you can see the autumn trees across the river. They grow on the Croatian side, now one of the European Union’s external borders.
Around 9 years ago I started collecting images and videos representing the sites of our migration. The first years we were hosted as refugees by three families in Austria. We lived in foreign houses while our own unfinished house in Bosnia was inhabited by refugee families from other Balkan-regions.
I am trying to reflect as well as to project our individual migration history which is embedded in collective migrational processes, by focusing on the house in Bosnia and the immediate area where it is located. Most of the houses remained unfinished, the area is characterised by orange and blue brick walls which I blurrily remember growing all around at this place (I was 5-7 years old). The house(s) are like memorials or monuments, symbolising the collapse of Yugoslavia and the migration waves as consequence.
Images and videos are projected from the inside out of the window apertures. This ephemeral installation process will be realised over a period of one year and is recorded with camera to be composed as an experimental movie accompanied by voice overs. As the movie will be submitted on various film festivals around the globe, I am planning an exhibition to display the project with large photographies of house fragments in combination with some of the captured installation videos.
I see this project metaphorically like you throw a stone in the water. There will be following examinations thematising the topic of migration in various media and further perspectives on the region, like concentric waves proceeding from the house. To give you a preview: Searching for Adrijana.
The last two images here are film stills, displaying already recorded projections which showing facade and surroundings off one of the houses we stayed in Austria. As a part of the project itself, we have visited the families we used to live with, not only but, also to take video and photo footage of their houses and areas next to their houses.
